As we blaze our way on the high speed AVE from Madrid to Sevillle, we’re being treated to mile after mile of the beautiful Castilian plains (even if only at 150 miles per hour).
This region was first made famous by Cervantes as the setting for his literary masterpiece Don Quixote. More recently you might recall Professor Higgins trying to convince Eliza Doolittle that “the rains in Spain fall mainly on the plain”.
While we can all appreciate that quaint rhyme, unfortunately it is far from true. In fact, the predominant rains in Spain fall in the northern part of the countries Galicia region along its northern Atlantic coastline.
I was reminded of this as we flew into Madrid this afternoon when I snapped several shots like this which clearly shows that there has been no recent rain on the plain (or on our plane either, for that matter.)
